Writer's picture: Africa MattersAfrica Matters

This International Women’s History Month, are proudly highlighting extraordinary women driving transformative change. Our next trailblazer is Fatou Wurie—a mother, a doctoral candidate at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a visionary leader redefining public health, technology, and gender advocacy across Africa and beyond.

Hailing from Sierra Leone, Fatou Wurie has been a driving force in tech-innovation, humanitarian response, and global health equity. Her groundbreaking initiatives have tackled global health crises, provided strategic oversight in emergency response, and created innovative solutions for women and girls in humanitarian settings.

Fatou has designed and led rights-based programs, responded to health outbreaks in Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and built health information chatbots deployed in over 50 countries, facilitating 20-25 million message exchanges. Her expertise has supported crisis response in Mozambique, Malawi, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and North-East Nigeria, ensuring women’s protection and access to essential health services.

In 2015, she founded The Survivor Dream Project (SDP), a two-year Ebola response initiative focused on women and girls. SDP provided psychosocial support, education pathways, and employment opportunities, advocating for increased healthcare resources for Ebola survivors.

Youterus Health: Transforming Uterine Healthcare in Africa

Fatou’s latest initiative, Youterus Health, is revolutionising uterine healthcare by integrating high-quality diagnostics into primary health systems across six African countries. With a mission to reach 1 million women and reduce diagnostic delays by 50% within three years, Youterus Health is addressing critical gaps in women’s healthcare.

Through the UTERO platform, Fatou is breaking the silence around fibroids, cervical cancer, and endometriosis—conditions that disproportionately affect African women. Combining AI-powered innovation with ancestral wisdom, Youterus Health ensures early detection, personalised care, and access to life-saving treatment.

A Trailblazer in Transformative Justice and Health Equity

Fatou Wurie exemplifies what it means to be a changemaker. Her ability to merge technology, advocacy, and public health solutions is transforming healthcare access, gender equity, and humanitarian response for African women and girls. By challenging societal taboos and systemic barriers, she is paving the way for a healthier, more equitable future.
